GROVE CITY, Pa. – Grove City College Senior Ben Wetzel’s summer was filled with unique opportunities. He completed two fellowships and will reap the rewards of significant research when he is published in January.
For two weeks, Wetzel of Terre Hill, Pa., participated as one of 24 students to receive a fellowship at the Erasmus Institute at the University of Notre Dame. Half the students were in the “Catholic Intellectual Traditions” seminar and the other half, including Wetzel, were in the “Humanities and Social Sciences” seminar. Wetzel’s group met with a new professor for three hours each weekday morning to discuss current academic trends. Additionally, Wetzel read material about each department studied for several hours each night.
The Erasmus seminars are designed for undergraduate students who are considering graduate school and an academic vocation while the Humanities and Social Sciences seminar is designed to introduce its participants to major contemporary trends in academic disciplines.
Additionally, Wetzel had a fellowship at Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society, where he worked three days a week.
“Two of the days I did library work, and the third day I did research on Mennonite fundamentalism,” Wetzel said. The culmination of his fellowship was a 15-page research paper.
“[My paper] focuses on a highly influential American Mennonite bishop, Daniel Kauffman (1865-1944), and his attempts to chart a uniquely Anabaptist ‘third way’ between mainstream evangelical fundamentalism and theological modernism.”
His work will appear in the January edition of “Pennsylvania Mennonite Heritage.”
