spacer SCOTT BULLOCK '88 TO SPEAK AT FOUNDERS LUNCHEON
spacer
September 16, 2010

GROVE CITY, Pa. – In 2005, Grove City College alumnus Scott Bullock ’88 argued the landmark case Kelo v. New London before the U.S. Supreme Court. On Sept. 21, Bullock will describe the case and what he believes America’s Founders would have thought of the ruling at the American Founders Luncheon, hosted by The Center for Vision & Values at Grove City College. The luncheon, “Little Pink Houses: Private Property, the Founders and Susette Kelo’s Story,” is scheduled to take place at the Rivers Club in Pittsburgh.

Sponsored by the Center and the Pittsburgh Federalist Society, the American Founders Luncheon Series brings to Pittsburgh respected scholars on America’s founding to present talks focused on the beliefs, actions and character of those leaders who pursued a “Great Experiment” in whether humans are capable of governing themselves.

Kelo v. New London considered the question of whether the government has the right to take private property by eminent domain to sell to private developers. The city of New London, Conn., seized Susette Kelo’s “little pink house” to make way for pharmaceutical giant Pfizer to expand, claiming the move would create jobs and broaden the city’s tax base. Bullock argued for Kelo in the case, but in a 5-4 vote, the Supreme Court ruled that New London had the right to seize Kelo’s house under the Fifth Amendment. The ruling quickly became one the most hotly debated high court decisions in decades.

A specialist in private property rights and a leading voice for eminent domain reform, Bullock is a senior attorney at the Institute for Justice, the nation’s only libertarian public interest law firm. The Arlington, Va.-based group takes cases involving potential government infringement on constitutional rights. For more information on the firm, visit www.ij.org.

The Founders Luncheon costs $17.76. To register, log onto http://grovecityconference.com or contact Brenda Vinton at (724) 450-1541 or blvinton@gcc.edu. Registration begins at 11:45 a.m. The program runs from noon to 12:50 p.m. The Rivers Club is located at One Oxford Centre, 301 Grant St., Pittsburgh, Pa.
