September 09, 2011
GROVE CITY, Pa. – Dr. Gary S. Smith ’72, chair of the department of history, professor of history and coordinator of the humanities core at Grove City College, will present on “The Indispensible Patriot: Samuel Adams and the Quest for Independence,” at the American Founders Luncheon on Sept. 13, beginning at noon. The luncheon, hosted by The Center for Vision & Values at Grove City College, will be held at the Rivers Club in Pittsburgh.
Sponsored by the Center, the American Founders Luncheon Series brings to Pittsburgh respected scholars on America’s founding to present talks focused on the beliefs, actions and character of those leaders who pursued a “Great Experiment” in whether humans are capable of governing themselves.
In his presentation, Smith, a professor at the College since 1978, will argue that if George Washington is deemed the “indispensable man” through winning the Revolutionary War and establishing the new republic, Samuel Adams deserves a similar title for his role in moving the colonies toward severing ties with England.
Smith will also explore how Adams, inspired by his understanding of Scripture and strong faith in God, supported the American cause and worked to attain American independence, protect people’s constitutional liberties and construct an upright society.
The Founders Luncheon costs $17.76. To register, visit www.visionandvalues.org, or contact Brenda Vinton at (724) 450-1541 or by e-mail at blvinton@gcc.edu. Registration begins at 11:45 a.m. The program runs from noon to 12:50 p.m. The Rivers Club is located at One Oxford Centre, 301 Grant St., Pittsburgh, Pa.
