spacer RECORD NUMBER OF MUSICIANS IN CONCERTO COMPETITION

GROVE CITY, Pa. – The record number of student musicians will compete in the annual Grove City College Concerto Competition beginning at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 1 in Ketler Auditorium of the Pew Fine Arts Center on campus. Twenty-three students will vie for three featured spots in the spring orchestra concert April 25. The competition is free and open to the public. Contestants are:

• Sophomore Emmalynne Adrian of Baden, Pa. – “Bassoon Concerto in
   F Major” by Franz Danzi
• Senior Kim Thomas of Harrisburg, Pa., and junior Julie Kulin of Corry,
   Pa. – “Concerto for Two Trumpets” by Antonio Vivaldi
• Sophomore Monica Dudek of Ford City, Pa., and senior Justin Horst
   of Woodbine, Md. – “La Ci Darem la Mano” from Wolfgang Amadeus
   Mozart’s “Don Giovanni”
• Junior Rebecca Smiddy of Miami, Fla. – “Concerto for Flute” by
   Jacques Ibert
• Sophomore Abigail VanPatter of Matthews, N.C. – “Danses Sacree et
   Profane for Harp” by Claude Debussy
• Sophomore Jamie and senior Megan Betteridge, both of Pittsford,
   N.Y. – “Concerto in E-flat for Two Horns” by Josef Fiala
• Sophomore Allison Hughes of McDonald, Pa. – “Concertino for
   Trombone” by Ferdinand David
• Junior Heather Armstrong of Elmira, N.Y. – “Concerto in C for
   Bassoon” by Jan Kozelun
• Freshman Sarah Folkens of Cincinnati, Ohio – “Concerto No. 1 for
   Cello” by Camille St-Saens
• Freshman Danielle Henry of Lyons, N.Y. – “Poem for Flute” by
   Charles Griffes
• Sophomore Brianna Dillon of West Lafayette, Ind. – “Introduction et
   Allegro for Harp” by Maurice Ravel
• Sophomore Abigail Huffman of Mischawaka, Ind. – “Concerto No. 1
   for Cello” by Camille St-Saens
• Senior Evelyn Talmage of Walker, Iowa – “Concerto for Oboe” by
   Ralph Vaughan Williams
• Sophomore Rebecca Melillo of Hudson, Mass. – “Concerto in C for
   Oboe” by Benedetto Marcello
• Junior Mark Dickinson of Lansdale, Pa. – “Concerto in g minor for
   Piano” by Felix Mendelssohn
• Junior Emily Maize of Indiana, Pa. – “Concerto No. 3 for Horn” by
   Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
• Junior Jessica VanDervort of Frederick, Md. –“Pisen Rusalky O
   Mesicku” from Antonin Dvorak’s “Rusalka”
• Sophomore Laura DeCowsky of York, Pa. – “Concerto No. 4 for 
   Horn” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
• Sophomore Kathryn Suffern of Orange City, Iowa – “Ain’t It a Pretty
   Night” from Carlisle Floyd’s “Susannah”
• Sophomore Jessica Andrew of Bow, N.H. – “Concerto for Piano” by 
   Edvard Grieg
• Sophomore Julia Pershe of State College, Pa. – “Concerto No. 4 for
   Piano” by Ludwig van Beethoven
• Senior Laura Prior of Londonderry, N.H. – “Nacqui all’affano” from
   Gioachino Rossini’s “La Cenerentola”
• Freshman Emily Stumpf of Baltimore, Md. – “Concerto No. 1 for Flute”
   by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Contestants are critiqued on rhythm, technique, intonation, musicianship and stage presence. The judges include Elizabeth Heath-Charles, music director of the Butler County Symphony Orchestra, and Dr. Ward Jamison, professor of music at Allegheny College.
