spacer PULITZER PRIZE-WINNING MUSICAL HITS GROVE CITY STAGE
spacer
October 23, 2006

GROVE CITY, Pa. – The 1932 Pulitzer Prize-winning musical “Of Thee I Sing” comes to the Grove City College stage Nov. 8-11. Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. each day, with an additional matinee performance at 2 p.m. Nov. 11. All shows will be in Ketler Auditorium in the Pew Fine Arts Center on the Grove City campus.

“Of Thee I Sing,” is a musical comedy written by George S. Kaufman and Morrie Ryskind and features music by George Gershwin and lyrics by Ira Gershwin. It was the first musical comedy to win a Pulitzer for best American play.

In this satirical take on Washington politics, John P. Wintergreen, played by senior Derrick Winger of Springville, N.Y., runs successfully for President using the campaign platform of love. His campaign managers host a beauty contest with the promise that the winner will marry Wintergreen after being proposed to in every state. Things go awry, however, when Wintergreen falls in love not with the beauty contest winner, Diana Devereaux, played by junior Kayla Carpenter of Montoursville, Pa., but secretary Mary Turner, portrayed by sophomore Erin Brignone of Buffalo, N.Y. The situation threatens to become an international scandal when Devereaux, a distant descendant of Napoleon, gets the French involved.

“Of Thee I Sing” is under the direction of communication professor Betsy Craig and student director Austin Klipp, a senior from Lexington, Mass. The student musical director is senior Jonathan Priano of Pittsburgh, Pa. Senior Sarah Watts of Lake Bluff, Ill., is stage manager, and technical director is senior Justine Scanlon of Penn Run, Pa.

Tickets are available by calling (724) 458-3331 or by e-mail at theatertickets@gcc.edu.
