spacer PSYCHOLOGY
spacer

 The Department of Psychology seeks to promote the following general educational and personal goals:

    • To aid the student in the development of a worldview which integrates knowledge in psychology with other disciplines and the Christian faith;
    • To apply/relate this integrated knowledge to the problems and opportunities of contemporary society; and
    • To explore with the student career paths in psychology and related fields.

To accomplish these general goals, the psychology faculty remains dedicated to liberal arts training with a commitment to mainstream scientific psychology. The empirical method of research is thus the model of preference. At the undergraduate level the student has the unique opportunity to relate psychological knowledge to other fields of study. This opportunity should aid the student in relating psychological knowledge not only toward the direction and quality of life in general, but also toward the growth and enrichment of one’s self. The student is thereby encouraged to examine these issues within the context of the Psychology Department’s curriculum.

CURRICULA

Psychology is a broad field of study, and the psychology major is designed to give the undergraduate exposure to the various sub-areas of the discipline. As such, required courses come from the areas of statistics and research, experimental psychology, clinical psychology and developmental psychology. Graduates with a psychology major will be well prepared for graduate study or to enter the work force with a liberal arts education. Both a B.A. and a B.S. in psychology are offered.

All students are welcome to join the Sociology, Social Work and Psychology Association (SSWAPA), which helps students explore mental health related fields through guest speakers. Academically qualified students may also join Psi Chi, a national psychology honorary.
