GROVE CITY, Pa. – An article written by four Grove City College computer science students and a faculty member has been accepted by the peer-reviewed quarterly “journal of graphics, gpu and game tools.”
The article, “Integer Ray Tracing,” is the result of research conducted during summer 2009 campus fellowships that were funded by the Swezey Fund for Scientific Research and Instrumentation. The article was written by seniors Jared Heinly of Mount Joy, Pa., and Kevin Bensema of Greensburg, Pa.; juniors Shawn Recker of Finleyville, Pa., and Jesse Porch of Easton, Md.; and co-authored by Dr. Christiaan Gribble ’00, assistant professor of computer science.
The article discusses the image synthesis method of ray tracing, which simulates the interaction of light with an environment to create highly realistic computer-generated images. The method was used to produce many of the visual effects in movies such as “Avatar,” “Shrek” and “Ice Age.” Ray tracing has also been used in the development of scientific visualization and computer games.
In the article, Gribble and his team share how they developed the first step of a solution that would allow the ray tracing method and computer processors to work more effectively together. Their program, “tangere,” is an open-source testing ground for other researchers in the computer graphics community experimenting with integer-only ray tracing methods.
Heinly and Bensema plan to continue their research in graduate school. Recker intends to attend graduate school to pursue computer science education. Porch will take part in 2010 Swezey-funded summer research.
Since joining the faculty in 2006, Gribble has co-authored more than a dozen journal articles and conference papers in areas related to computer graphics and computer science education, many of which feature Grove City College students as the primary contributors.
Twenty-one students in the Albert A. Hopeman Jr. School of Science and Engineering completed Swezey-funded research on campus during the summer, under the advisement of 10 faculty members.
