spacer PRESIDENT JEWELL TO SERVE AS CHAIR FOR PAC COUNCIL
spacer
July 14, 2011

GROVE CITY, Pa. – Grove City College President Richard G. Jewell ’67 will serve as the chair of the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Presidents' Council in the 2011-12 academic year. Jewell succeeds Dr. Ken Smith, president at Geneva College, who served as the chair of the PAC Presidents' Council in 2010-11.

Jewell, a Pittsburgh lawyer and businessman, is a Grove City College alumnus and longtime Bethel Park, Pa., resident. He is also a U.S. Army veteran, having served from 1967 to 1971 primarily with the Army’s U.S. Third Armored Cavalry Regiment. In the fall of 2003, he left his Pittsburgh position as a director of the Chicago-based Navigant Consulting Inc., (successor by merger to Peterson Consulting LLC) the nation’s largest forensic accounting firm, to become the president of Grove City College.

Prior to joining Navigant, Jewell was a senior administrator in applied research at the University of Pittsburgh. He served as executive vice president and COO of the University of Pittsburgh Trust, the holding entity for five of the university’s applied research companies. He also was a member of the university’s senior management council and president of Pittsburgh Applied Research Corporation, the for-profit operating company of the 1-million-square-foot University of Pittsburgh Applied Research Center in Harmarville, Pa. For 10 years prior to that time, he was general corporate attorney for Harbison-Walker Refractories, a division of Dresser Industries, Inc. His initial law work was in litigation for the Pittsburgh law firm of Wayman, Irvin, Trushel & McAuley.

He was long active in the affairs at Grove City College, having served as president of the national Alumni Association. He was first elected to the Board of Trustees at age 29 in 1974. He co-chaired the College’s first-ever capital campaign, Change & Commitment, which ran from 1998 to 2006 and raised $69 million. The College has recently launched Grove City Matters: A Campaign to Advance Grove City College, which at $90 million is the largest capital campaign in the College’s history.

He is a member of the College’s Swimming and Diving Hall of Fame and was the Penn-Ohio Conference Diving Champion in 1966 and 1967. While a student at the College, he was editor-in-chief of the College’s newspaper, The Collegian; president of the Student Government Association; captain of the swimming team and 1967 Omicron Delta Kappa Senior Man of the Year. This year he was inducted into the Bethel Park Athletic Hall of Fame for his scholastic diving career, which included a WPIAL Championship in 1963.

He has been married to his wife Dayl for 40 years. She is a graduate of Geneva College and enjoyed a long career at PNC Bank where she was a vice president and district manager in the Community Banking operations. The Jewells have a daughter, Jessica, who is married to Pittsburgh lawyer Paul Lalley.

With Jewell assuming the chair of the Presidents' Council, the other standing PAC councils will also be chaired by Grove City College representatives in the upcoming academic year. Dr. Donald Lyle, chair of the department of physical education and athletics, athletic director and professor of physical education, will serve as chair of the PAC Athletic Administrators Council, while Susan Roberts, associate director of athletics for women and associate professor of physical education, will chair the PAC Senior Woman Administrators Council. The PAC Faculty Athletic Representatives Association will also be co-chaired by Dr. Eric Potter, professor of English, and Dr. Julie Moeller ’93, associate professor of Biblical and religious studies.

Founded in 1955, the Presidents' Athletic Conference continues its mission of promoting intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 select private institutions in Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Kentucky, the PAC remains a unique organization in this day of high pressure intercollegiate athletics. With academics at the center of each member's philosophy, the PAC is built on the principle that an athletic program is a part of college life, but not an entity in itself. The PAC annually crowns champions in 19 sports (10 men, nine women).
