The philosophy of the Department of Physical Education and Grove City College is that which is expressed by the generally accepted educational theme of a Christian liberal arts college that teaching should be aimed at the “whole individual,” giving careful attention to the development of psychomotor (physical development), cognitive (basic reasoning), and the affective (social, emotional, and spiritual) behavioral goals of the student regardless of his/her major.

In an attempt to realize this philosophy, the Department of Physical Education presents a balanced program that encompasses the many facets of physical education. The specific objectives of the program are to develop a wellness lifestyle, to cultivate an interest in recreation, and to encourage desirable social and moral standards.

CURRICULUM

The required freshmen orientation courses for both men and women are designed to give each incoming student an awareness of personal fitness and wellness. The instructional phase of the curriculum integrates fitness and wellness principles as they relate to lifetime physical activity. The evaluation process for each student will be comprised of written examinations, special projects, and a fitness appraisal. The ultimate goal is to provide an opportunity for each student to develop a personal responsibility of his/her own wellness lifestyle.

Elective Program
Upon completion of the required Freshman Orientation course, upperclassmen may choose to take one elective course each semester. The offerings include: aerobics, advanced fitness conditioning, bowling, dance, free weights, racquetball, tennis, volleyball, basic principles of athletic training, American Red Cross Life Guarding Certification, American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification, and American Red Cross First Aid and CPR Certification.

Minor in Exercise Science
The Exercise Science curriculum is available to students of all majors. It will be most helpful to students with career aspirations in commercial or community based health, fitness, coaching and/or athletics. The curriculum also provides an opportunity for students to expand on their experiences from Freshman Orientation, in pursuit of health related professions which require graduate studies, doctoral research and/or professional training. Students having completed the prerequisite courses in general education in the areas of biology, chemistry, and physical education will likely begin the minor in Exercise Science during the fall semester of their sophomore or junior year.
