September 20, 2011
GROVE CITY, Pa. – Grove City College will host a theatrical performance based on the life of famous scientist Madame Marie Curie, as portrayed by Susan Marie Frontczak, in “MANYA – A Living History of Marie Curie” on Tuesday, Oct. 11 from 7 – 9 p.m. in Ketler Auditorium of the Pew Fine Arts Center on campus. The performance celebrates the 100th anniversary of Curie’s second Nobel Prize. The production, highly acclaimed by professionals in both the arts and sciences, is free and open to the public.
In the performance, Frontczak will highlight the obstacles Curie overcame to achieve her goals, such as political oppression; scientific emergence and fame; and how tragedy forced her into single motherhood. For 22 years, Frontczak has brought literature to life and honed personal experiences into acclaimed performances. She has presented as Curie in more than 30 states, as well as in Canada and Europe. In addition to performing at Grove City College, the program will travel to Puerto Rico, Denmark, Switzerland, and the U.S. states of Colorado, Florida, Kentucky, Michigan, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and California in fall 2011.
Curie, best known for the discovery of radium and radioactivity, was the first woman to receive a doctorate in the sciences in Europe; the first woman to receive a Nobel prize; the first person to receive a second Nobel Prize, a feat not to be repeated for another 60 years, and the first woman to teach at the University of Paris in its 600-year history.
Curie’s perseverance in purifying a grain of radium from a ton of pitchblende inspired Frontczak to pursue her undergraduate degree in engineering at Swarthmore College in southwest Philadelphia. She worked in the field for 14 years before pursuing full-time storytelling. Believing science and art are valid outlets for creativity, Frontczak aims to reveal the human behind the scientist, while placing Curie’s life and accomplishments in a memorable historical context.
The Grove City College production of “MANYA” is sponsored by the College Department of Physics, Department of History, Physics Club and Theater Program, as well as the Penn-Ohio Border Section of the American Chemical Society. The program was developed with support from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Colorado Council of the Arts and Boulder County Arts Alliance.
