GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Grove City College Symphony Orchestra will present its first concert of the academic year on Oct. 9 at 8 p.m. in Ketler Auditorium of the Pew Fine Arts Center. The performance is free and open to the public; no tickets are required.
The orchestra will be celebrating several composer anniversaries that occur in 2009. George Frederic Handel died in 1759; Franz Joseph Haydn died in 1809; and Felix Mendelssohn was born in 1809.
The concert will begin with the “Overture to Ruy Blas” by Mendelssohn. The orchestra also will present the first movement of “Symphony 104” by Haydn, an excerpt from Handel’s “Water Music” and Mendelssohn’s “Sinfonia XI in b minor” for string orchestra. The concert will close with Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 4 – the “Italian.”
