RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES
Students have the opportunity in the junior and senior years to perform independent work one-on-one with a faculty member. Areas of investigation include water and wildlife research with implications for resource management, cardiovascular research in exercise physiology, and molecular genetic studies with implications for diseases such as cancer. GCC is well-equipped with modern technology and facilities to support these research activities.
INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
Our majors are encouraged to apply for internships which provide valuable experience and credentials for future achievement in a job or in a graduate/professional program. These internships take students into clinical, research and field settings under the guidance of a host supervisor and a GCC faculty sponsor. Our students are praised frequently by host-site evaluators as being among their best. More information about internships is available at http://science.gcc.edu/biol, the Biology Department home page.
CAREER AND GRADUATE SCHOOL OPPORTUNITIES
Each year about half of those students graduating with degrees in biology will pursue health-related fields with the largest representation accepted into medical schools, both allopathic and osteopathic. We typically have representation in most all of the other health-related fields such as veterinary medicine, dentistry, podiatry, physician assistant, nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, medical technology, cardiovascular technology, optometry, and pharmacy. A professional option plan allows qualified students to move into a professional school after the junior year. This option most frequently attracts pre-optometry and pre-pharmacy students. The other half of our students typically pursue a M.S. or Ph.D. degree in one of the many departments of a major university related to biology or go directly into teaching at the secondary level, or seek employment in laboratory, environment, business, technology, and church related areas. More information about career opportunities is available at http://science.gcc.edu/biol, the departmental home page.
