GROVE CITY, Pa. – One Book One Grove City, an organization dedicated to building community through a shared literary experience, will host “The Kite Runner” at 4 p.m. Oct. 29 and “Osama” at 4 p.m. Nov. 12 at the Guthrie Theater in Grove City, Pa. The films will feature a formal introduction and an opportunity to donate to Pennies for Peace upon arrival.
The films, which are free and open to the public, build on themes present in the organization’s text, “Three Cups of Tea,” a New York Times bestseller, written by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin.
“The Kite Runner,” directed by Marc Forster, shares the tale of an Afghan refugee, Amir, returning to his native country under the Taliban’s iron-fisted rule to face the secrets of his childhood. The film was nominated for an Oscar in 2008 for Best Achievement in Music Written for a Motion Picture.
“Osama,” directed by Siddiq Barmak, tells the story of a young Afghan girl who disguises herself as a boy, taking the name Osama, to support her family when the Taliban forbids women to leave their homes without male companionship. The film, shot entirely in Afghanistan for the first time since 1996, was awarded a Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film in 2004.
The organization, sponsored by Grove City College, is partners with the Grove City Area Chamber of Commerce, Grove City Education Center, Grove City Community Library, the Guthrie Theater, Olde Town Grove City and the United Way.
