September 09, 2010
GROVE CITY, Pa. – One Book One Grove City, an organization dedicated to building community through a shared literary experience, will host a kickoff event from 6 to 8 p.m. Sept. 20 in the Carnegie Alumni Center on the Grove City College campus. The event will feature an introduction to the community’s shared text, “Three Cups of Tea,” and several speakers including College President Richard G. Jewell ’67. No reservation is required. Guests of all ages are welcome to attend throughout the two-hour kickoff.
“Three Cups of Tea,” a #1 New York Times Bestseller, written by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin, recounts the journey that led Mortenson from a failed attempt to climb Pakistan’s K2, the world’s second largest mountain, to successfully establishing schools in some of the most isolated regions of Pakistan and Afghanistan.
Built on the belief that “a community that reads together, succeeds together,” the organization seeks to inspire interest in the text through the kickoff event and encourage book discussion throughout the following free programs. These programs include a showing of “The Kite Runner” and “Osama” at the Guthrie Theater, a community dinner at the Carnegie Alumni Center and participation in the United Way “Day of Caring.”
The organization, sponsored by Grove City College, is partners with the Grove City Area Chamber of Commerce, Grove City Education Center, Grove City Community Library, the Guthrie Theater, Olde Town Grove City and the United Way.
