GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Office of Multicultural Recruiting and Retention at Grove City College will launch the “Unity in Diversity Brown Bag Lunch Series” on Thursday, Oct. 13, from 12 noon to approximately 1:30 p.m. in the Great Room of the Breen Student Union on campus. Attendees are encouraged to bring their lunches to the event; beverages and cookies will be provided. The event is free and open to the public.
At the event, Dr. Jennifer Scott ’99, chair of the department of communication studies and assistant professor of communication studies, will present “A Tale of Two Voices: Overcoming communication barriers through the use of dialogue theory,” followed by an interactive discussion.
The presentation will tackle societal questions, such as: Can we learn to engage each other on issues that we differ and listen respectfully for what it is that we can learn – about the subject, about others and ourselves, about our common values?; Can we put aside our assumptions and sit with the discomfort and creative potential of not knowing?
The presentation and discussion is part of a campus-wide initiative aimed at developing skills and awareness of dialogue and encouraging engagement across differences in both classrooms and community. Drawing upon the work of Mikhail Bakhtin, Russian scholar of literary theory, ethics and philosophy of language, Scott will discuss the importance of cultivating a “dialogic imagination” and the role that active listening can play in helping others negotiate difference and engage multiple perspectives.
The series will include presentations in November, January and March. For more information about the series, contact Dr. Lorie Johnson-Osho, director of multicultural recruiting and retention and assistant professor of education, at (724) 967-2683.
