AUDITION PROCEDURES
Students desiring to major in music at Grove City College must complete an audition before a faculty committee for acceptance into the music department.

Alternate audition times must be scheduled through the music office.  The audition is required for admittance into the Music Department.  While an in-person audition is preferred, a high quality  video may be submitted when time or distance makes an in-person audition impossible.  Upon completion of your audition, the Music Department will notify the Admissions Office that you have performed an audition and whether or not you are being recommended for acceptance by the Music Department.  The Admissions Office makes the final decision on acceptances to the college.   No decision will be made on your application by the Admissions Office if you have not completed your audition.

Applications for GCC Admission must be received by the Admissions Office November 15 for Early Acceptance and February 1 for Regular Acceptance.  A personal interview with Admissions, 724-458-2100, is encouraged by the Music Department.

PLEASE NOTE:

ALL MUSIC AUDITIONS FOR EARLY DECISION MUST BE COMPLETED BY NOVEMBER 15.

ALL REGULAR DECISION MUSIC AUDITIONS MUST BE COMPLETED BEFORE FEBRUARY 22.

ALL STUDENTS WHO AUDITION MUST PRINT OUT AND COMPLETE THE PERSONAL DATA SHEET TO BRING WITH THEM TO THE AUDITION. THE PERSONAL DATA SHEET CAN BE DOWNLOADED HERE.

Audition Requirements:
There is not a prescribed music solo list for the audition.  Musical selections of the standard academic repertoire for your instrument or voice are appropriate.  Two or three selections of contrasting style are preferred.  The faculty will be looking for an appropriate level of competency and repertoire difficulty for the freshman level, above average musicality, and potential for growth.  Memorization is encouraged but not mandatory.  The performance will last approximately 10 minutes.

PIANO/ORGAN

Piano/Organ  majors should  prepare classical selections, etudes, and other types of keyboard literature, preferably from different time periods.  Pianists should also prepare 4 octave scales. For additional information contact  Dr. Carter   bhcarter@gcc.edu

VOICE

Voice majors should be familiar with different styles of vocal literature such as art songs and opera/ oratorio.  A selection from a musical may also be included with the previous requirement.  Piano accompaniment will be provided for voice auditions if needed, or you can provide your own.  Piano proficiency is encouraged for all voice majors especially those planning a career in education.  For more information contact Dr. Browne  dabrowne@gcc.edu

BRASS/WOODWIND/STRING/PERCUSSION

Brass/Woodwind/ String/ Percussion majors can perform any of the standard solo literature for the particular instrument.  Piano accompaniment is not a requirement. For more information on string instruments contact Dr. Konzen rakonzen@gcc.edu  For more information on band instruments contact Dr. Arnold eparnold@gcc.edu

Students auditioning for acceptance by the music department will also be tested in basic theory, tonal memory, and rhythmic skills.  Accepted music students are offered the opportunity to take a theory placement test before the fall semester of the freshman year for correct course placement.

Current GCC music majors will also be available to answer any questions about student life and their experiences in the department and ensembles.  Parents are encouraged to come to the audition.

Please try to schedule your audition on the earliest date possible.  Please FAX 724-458-2164 or bring the enclosed data sheet to the Music Department on audition day if you have not previously completed the form.  In case of poor weather conditions, your interview and audition can be re-scheduled.  All telephone calls to the Department of Music should be made to 724-458-2084.

Please arrive 10-15 minutes before the scheduled audition time so that you are able to warm-up.  You will be greeted at room 107 in the upper level of the Pew Fine Arts Center.
