GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Grove City College Sabbatical Selection Committee has awarded semester-long sabbaticals during the 2011-12 academic year to Dr. Paul Munson, professor of music, and Dr. Michael Coulter ’91, professor of political science.
In the fall of 2011, Munson will seek to continue his research on hymnody, the singing of hymns, and finish the book he is currently working on with Dr. Joshua Drake, assistant professor of music and humanities.
The book, which is divided into two main sections, is intended to be a one-stop resource for individuals searching to understand traditional hymnody, while providing the origins, history and benefits of hymn singing. The first portion of Munson’s book will explore the biblical mandate of congregational singing and the church’s historical efforts to realize the mandate. The second segment of the text will examine essays on the theological, literary and musical merits of 120 well-known hymns.
In the spring of 2012, Coulter, who wrote his dissertation on English political theorist John Locke and the role of citizens in a free society, aims to use the sabbatical as an opportunity to revise his dissertation and transform it into a book manuscript.
Since nearly all of Locke’s writings and papers are available in text or digital form, Coulter will continue to conduct his research from the Grove City area.
Since its inception in 2004, the College’s sabbatical program has helped 20 faculty members pursue their research interests. In that time, the program has led to 10 books or manuscripts, more than 10 published articles, 20 presentations at professional conferences and two Center for Vision & Values white papers
