MOUNT VERNON, VA - AUGUST 4, 2007 |
A sold out crowd greeted President and Mrs. Dick Jewell '67 on their first ever visit to historic Mount Vernon, home to the nation's first president, George Washington. In spite of record heat and humidity, alumni and friends enjoyed a picture perfect day with a luncheon featuring Dr. Gary Smith '72, author of the book Faith and the Presidency. After lunch, all the guests were gathered into three groups for personalized tours of the entire estate, led by Mount Vernon's exceptional docent staff. A fitting end to the day was the ceremonial weath laying at Washington's tomb, where his own words to a new nation were read by veterans of military service selected from each group, including President Jewell. Also on hand from the College were Jeff Prokovich '89, Vice President of Advancement and Charlene (Griffin '83) Shaw, Assistant Director of Alumni Relations.
