GROVE CITY, Pa. – Three students from the Grove City College Department of Mathematics will present their research at the largest annual professional mathematics conference in San Francisco, Calif., Jan. 13 through 16.
Seniors Michelle Bowser of Stow, Ohio, Trevor Partridge of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Kirsten Rodgers of Burke, Va., will present their work, titled “The strong symmetric genus of small D-type generalized symmetric groups” both during a 20-minute presentation and as a poster at the Joint Mathematics Meetings. The meetings include the American Mathematical Society and the Mathematical Association of America and draw about 6,000 participants each year.
The students will present the research they conducted this summer during the mathematics department’s Student Opportunities in Accelerated Research program. SOAR is funded by the Swezey Fund for Scientific Research and Instrumentation. Twenty-one students in the Albert A. Hopeman Jr. School of Science and Engineering completed Swezey-funded research on campus during the summer, under the advisement of 10 faculty members. This is the second year the mathematics department received Swezey Fund money.
