spacer MARATHON OIL BOARD CHAIR SERVING AS HOPEMAN LECTURER
spacer
October 08, 2007

GROVE CITY, Pa. – Thomas J. Usher, chairman of the board of directors for Marathon Oil Corporation will serve as the 2007-08 Albert A. Hopeman Jr. lecturer at 7 p.m. Oct. 24 in the Sticht Lecture Hall of the Hall of Arts and Letters on the Grove City College campus. His presentation, “Engineering for Wealth Creation,” is free and open to the public.

Usher had served as chairman of the board and chief executive officer of USX Corporation until 2001, when USX spun off its wholly owned subsidiary, United States Steel Corporation. USX subsequently changed its name to Marathon Oil Corporation, headquartered in Houston, Texas.

A native of Reading, Pa., Usher holds three degrees, all from the University of Pittsburgh: a bachelor of science degree in industrial engineering; a master’s degree in operations research; and a doctorate in systems engineering.

Beginning his career with U.S. Steel in the industrial engineering department in Pittsburgh in 1965, Usher held a variety of positions in that department until 1975, when he transferred to the firm’s South Works in Chicago. There, he served in several leadership posts and was then named assistant division superintendent of the primary mills at Gary Works in Indiana.

Usher returned to Pittsburgh and again served in many administrative and leadership positions. By 1990, he was president of the steel division and had joined the USX Corporation corporate policy committee. He was elected president of U.S. Steel and to the USX board of directors in 1991, president and chief operating officer of USX in 1994, and the following year, chairman of the board and chief executive officer of USX. He served in that capacity until the year-end 2001 spin-off of U. S. Steel, when he assumed the role of chairman, chief executive officer and president of U. S. Steel. From June 2003 until September 2004, he served as chairman and CEO and then retired.

He continued to serve as chairman of the board of directors until February 2006. In 2003, Usher received the 2002 Steelmaker of the Year Award from the Iron & Steel Society in honor of his innovative and successful leadership. Today, he also serves on the boards of H.J. Heinz Company, PPG Industries, PNC Financial Services Group, the University of Pittsburgh, the Boy Scouts of America and The Extra Mile Education Foundation.
