Music professor Kolm tops
national composition contest

Dr. Jonathan Kolm, assistant professor of music and fine arts at Grove City College, has been awarded the 2009 Craig and Janet Swan Composer Prize, sponsored by the School of Music at University of Minnesota. His work, “Prophecies,” was chosen out of 74 competitive entries from around the country.

The national competition seeks the best in unperformed works by emerging composers. “Prophecies” will be performed by the University of Minnesota orchestra in a world premiere performance Dec 9.

A rising composer of American music, Kolm’s works have been heard around the country and abroad. His music combines emotional intensity and rich harmonic colors and has been recognized with many awards and prizes in national competitions, including the Young New Yorkers Chorus competition, the New Choral Music Competition and the Austin Peay State Composition Competition.

Kolm earned a Bachelor of Music in piano performance in 1999 and his Master of Music in composition in 2000, both from Virginia Commonwealth University. He earned his Doctorate of Musical Arts at the University of Texas prior to coming to Grove City College in 2008.

Kolm maintains a Web site at www.jonathankolm.com.
