GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Grove City College Florence E. MacKenzie Campus-Community Awards selection committee has chosen two community leaders as the 2008 recipients: Dr. Charles E. Kriley ’88, Grove City College professor of chemistry, and Dick Stevenson, state representatives for the 8th Legislative District, which includes Grove City in Mercer County.
Beginning in 1971 until her death ten years later, Florence E. MacKenzie faithfully served Grove City College and the community of Grove City. As wife of former president Dr. Charles S. MacKenzie, she sought to establish strong town-gown relationships. An active member of numerous local organizations, she served as president of the former Grove City Hospital’s board.
Campus honoree Dr. Charles Kriley, a member of the Grove City College Class of 1988, serves as his alma mater as a professor of chemistry. He joined the College faculty in 1996.
Kriley is a “mentor and … teacher, one who has unselfishly given me his time and attention,” wrote one nominator. “Dr. Kriley is a compassionate and enthusiastic man, giving all of his time to help others enjoy theirs. These qualities are undoubtedly … why he is so well-liked among his students, advisees and colleagues.”
Born in Butler, Pa., and a chemistry major at Grove City, Kriley earned his Ph.D. in inorganic chemistry from Purdue University in 1993. He taught at Purdue University Calumet for three years before joining the faculty at Grove City. He has been published in several academic journals.
On campus, he works extensively with student groups. He has served as the Grove City College rugby club adviser since 1996, has worked with students during the Parents’ Weekend All-College Sing event since 2001 and advised the Kappa Alpha Phi fraternity from 1997-2007. Three other student groups also benefit from Kriley’s leadership: the local American Chemical Society Student Chapter, the Newman Club and the Tri-Rho housing group.
Kriley shares his love of science with students in the community as well. Since 1999, he has organized an annual chemistry show for local elementary students from preschool to third grade. About 300 young scientists attend each year. Additionally, he coordinated four summer Science and Engineering Camps at Grove City College for ninth- through 12th-graders. The camps encompassed chemistry, physic, biology and engineering and invited students to campus on weekdays.
He is also a member of the Grove City Barbershop group, a past member of the Grove City Bach Society and a member of the Saint Mary’s of the Assumption Christmas Choir in Herman, Pa, where he also serves as assistant organist.
Kriley is an avid traveler and has tied his global trips with his academics. He has led two overseas Germany trips titled “A History of Chemistry in Germany” and “From Erlenmeyer to Einstein.” He has also led an astronomy trip to England and Ireland with former Grove City College professor Dr. Kevin Mackay.
Rep. Dick Stevenson has brought his experience as a leader in local government and business to Harrisburg since he was first elected to serve the 8th Legislative District in 2000. Now in his fourth term, he serves on the environmental resources and energy, professional licensure and tourism and recreational development committees.
During his time in office, he authored four bills into law concerning veterans of recent military conflicts, government documents and sales tax, fees on bad checks, and apprenticeships in the real estate appraisal. Stevenson has also championed legislation to spur economic growth in the state through the Keystone Manufacturing Initiative.
In the House of Representatives, Stevenson has co-sponsored bills to promote Pennsylvania business through economic development, affordable housing, industrial resource centers, tax relief and research and development opportunities.
In 2007, Stevenson was selected as director of public affairs on the leadership team of the Pennsylvania chapter of the American Legislative Exchange Council, where he exchanges ideas on the principles of limited government and free-market economics among policymakers, business leaders and the general public – concepts in tune with the philosophy of Grove City College.
“In addition to his busy schedule and many commitments, he has maintained a warm and personal friendship with many of us here at Grove City College,” wrote one nominator.
Locally, Stevenson has served as past chairman of the Mercer County Commissioners and as a member of the Grove City Borough Council, including six years as president. In these capacities, he was a constant support to the College, and continues to be a champion for the institution as a state representative. Stevenson has also been an enthusiastic guest speaker in classrooms and at lectures and is a frequent attendee of campus events.
The certified general appraiser has owned Stevenson and Company for more than 20 years in Grove City. He is past president and director of the Greater Mercer County Board of Realtors and served on the board of the Council of Pennsylvania Real Estate Appraisers.
The Mercer County lawmaker served the U.S. Air Force from 1968-72. He earned his bachelor’s degree from St. Francis College in New York and his M.B.A. from Suffolk University in Massachusetts.
He and his wife, Sue, have two daughters, Sarah and Emily, and three grandchildren.
