GROVE CITY, Pa. – Dr. Richard Konzen, professor of music and Grove City College organist, will present his annual faculty recital on Sunday, Nov. 6, at 2:30 p.m. in Harbison Chapel on campus. Konzen will perform two significant instrumental works on the College’s historic Kimball organ, the Chorale Fantasy on the hymn “Sleepers, Wake” by Max Reger and the “Sixth Symphony” for organ by Charles-Marie Widor.
Composed in 1900, “Sleepers, Wake” illustrates Reger’s fascination with the Protestant chorale. In this setting, Reger portrays three stanzas of the hymn in a manner that captures the wide spectrum of dynamics available on the organ.
Widor’s “Sixth Symphony” is a masterpiece of French symphonic writing for the organ. In the early nineteenth century, the organ in France underwent tremendous alterations, such as increased wind pressure, more keys on the keyboard, new stops added and special devices installed that made playing the instrument similar to playing a fine piano. The symphony follows an architectural plan with the tempos of the movements giving a fast and slow rhythmic pattern.
The recital is free and open to the public; no tickets are required.
