GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Grove City College Jazz Ensemble defeated seven other colleges to take first place at the “All Eastern” U.S. Jazz Invitational at the 2010 Villanova Jazz Festival in late March.
The 21-student ensemble is led by Dr. Joseph M. Pisano ’94, assistant chair of the department of music and fine arts and associate professor of music and fine arts technology. The Grove City College last participated in the festival in 2002, taking third place in the jazz band competition and first place in the smaller jazz combo Competition.
The Villanova Jazz Festival provides local high school and college jazz ensembles with the opportunity to compete and showcase their musical talents. Since 1962, the festival has attracted jazz musicians from around the country including Randy Brecker, Jon Faddis, Ellis Marsallis and Nestor Torres.
Judges of the competition included Jerry Nowak, one of the most widely published composers and arrangers of the past 40 years; Jack Ebbert, freelance musician and composer; Randy Kapralick, lead trombone for legendary Motown groups The Four Tops and The Temptations; Dr. Bill Frabizio, music chair at Acadia University and trumpet expert; and Alan Rochlin, played behind top artists such as Johnny Mathis and Natalie Cole.
As a student of the College, Pisano participated in the jazz band for four years and was the student director of the ensemble from 1992 to 1994. Pisano has been employed by Grove City College since 1996.
