GROVE CITY, Pa. – Grove City College will host 2010 Jack Kennedy Memorial Alumni Achievement Award-winner Dr. Donald A. Shockey Jr. ’63 as the featured speaker for the 2011 Albert A. Hopeman Jr. Memorial Lecture in Science and Engineering on April 12 at 7 p.m. in Sticht Lecture Hall of the Hall of Arts and Letters on campus. The presentation, “Adventures of a Fracture Physicist: Making Success Out of Failure,” is free and open to the public.
Shockey, director of SRI International’s Center for Fracture Physics, is an internationally recognized expert in fracture of materials and structures. He joined SRI in 1971 after earning a doctorate in materials science at Carnegie Mellon University and completing a three-year post-doctoral appointment at the Ernst-Mach-Institut in Freiburg, Germany.
In his 39 years at SRI, he has directed more than 350 research projects for government and industry. His current efforts include developing new transparent materials and structural designs for weight-efficient windows on military vehicles and spacecraft; tear-resistant astronaut gloves; stents for coronary and peripheral arteries; and advanced fractographic methods for diagnosing failures and predicting the useful life of aircraft, bridges and pipelines.
Shockey has published more than 150 technical articles, holds several patents and serves on the NASA panel of Materials Experts and National Academy of Sciences committee. He is an Institute Fellow, a Fellow of ASM International, the Year 2000 recipient of the John S. Rinehart award for pioneering work in the field of dynamic fracture, and the 2006 recipient of the Murray Medal for excellence in experimental mechanics.
In May 1963, Shockey was the first student in Grove City College history to be named both the Omicron Delta Kappa Sportsman of the Year and Senior Man of the Year.
The Jack Kennedy Memorial Alumni Achievement Awards were named in honor and memory of longtime Director of Alumni Relations and Career Services Jack Kennedy ’37. The achievement awards were originally established in 1964 by the Grove City College Alumni Association to recognize alumni who have made significant contributions to their fields and to society. The program has recognized nearly 170 alumni.
The annual Albert A. Hopeman Jr. Memorial Lecture in Science and Engineering is sponsored by the Grove City College Alumni Association and named in honor and memory of Albert A. Hopeman Jr., chairman of the Grove City College Board of Trustees from 1972 to 1998.
