Touring Choir to perform with Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra

The Grove City College Touring Choir will perform with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Maestro Manfred Honeck, for a three-night stand April 1 to 3 at Heinz Hall in Pittsburgh.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the students of Grove City College to sing with one of the premier orchestras in the United States and a can’t-miss opportunity for friends, families and supporters of Grove City to hear a wonderful concert,” Dr. Katherine Mueller, assistant professor of music and director of Choral Activities.

Grove City’s Touring Choir will be joined by choirs from four other colleges, Washington and Jefferson, Duquesne University, Chatham University and St. Vincent, to form a 138-member “All University Choir.” Students have been rehearsing under the direction of Maestro Robert Page, director emeritus of the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh.

The repertoire for the evening includes Bernstein’s “Chichester Psalms,” Verdi’s “Te Deum” for double choir, the prologue from Boito’s “Mephistopheles” and “O Fortuna” from “Carmina Burana” as well as pieces by Brahms and Orff. Renowned pianist Emanuel Ax will return to Pittsburgh for the first time since 2013 to play Brahms Piano Concerto No. 2, an epic 50-minute concerto written at the height of Brahms’ fame and compositional power. The All University Choir was organized due to Honeck’s desire to solidify the connection between great performers like Ax and talented collegiate musicians.

The Grove City Touring Choir seeks to praise and glorify God and to minister to others through the medium of music, striving together to achieve choral excellence. In addition to the annual spring tour, the choir performs for churches and schools in the Western Pennsylvania area and at various campus events. Members of the choir come from many different academic disciplines and participate in the Touring Choir as an extracurricular activity. Students perform under the direction of Dr. Katherine Mueller.
