“From Western PA to Founding Father: The Making of George Washington”

Speaker: Dr. Gary L. Gregg

Americans often look at George Washington as if he himself were carved from the stone of Mount Rushmore. One author once joked that Washington seemed to have been born on horseback fully dressed and upon entering the world he gave a stately bow. Washington, however, was not born the great leader America came to know and rely upon. Rather, he rose from middling beginnings to become a hero (and then a failure and then a hero once more) in and around the area that came to be known as Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. What drove Washington in his early days? How did he overcome the challenges he faced? What influenced him along his path to becoming the “Cincinnatus of the West?” Through the stories of Washington experiences in western Pennsylvania we will explore the making of America’s Founding Father.
