GROVE CITY, Pa. – The 2007-08 Grove City College Guest Artist Series begins Oct. 2 with a performance of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “The Marriage of Figaro” by the Opera Theater of Pittsburgh in the first of four performances this year. All events will begin at 8 p.m. in Ketler Auditorium of the Pew Fine Arts Center on the Grove City College campus.
The Opera Theater presents innovative opera for imaginative audiences. Its production of “The Marriage of Figaro,” Mozart’s timeless comedic masterpiece, does not miss a beat, musically or emotionally. Its overture, ensembles and arias tell a witty and heartwarming tale of love, betrayal and forgiveness. The company performs operas in English, both for the advantage of the audience and the singers.
On Nov. 14, Red, Hot…& Blue! takes audiences on a musical journey through the decades: from Ragtime and the Jazz Era to the Rockin’ ’60s and Disco ’70s in its “White Christmas” show. With award-winning costumes, quick-moving choreography and precise vocal harmonies, this high energy show appeals to audiences of all ages. Several Christmas numbers will be added to the show for this holiday special. Red, Hot…& Blue! is a song and dance revue from Branson, Mo., which has played at the Ain’t Misbehavin’ Supper Club and other venues for more than 10 years.
José White String Quartet with Pianist Michiko Otaki continues the series on Feb. 11. Composed of four outstanding young Latin American musicians residing in Mexico, the group is dedicated to chamber music. The members pay tribute to José White, a noted Cuban violinist of the 19th and early 20th century. The quartet debuted in 1997 and recently won first prize in Mexico’s leading chamber music international competition. Their performance will offer standard quartet literature and works by composers of Latin American origin.
Dallas Brass concludes the series on April 21. One of America’s foremost musical ensembles, the group has established a unique blend of traditional brass instruments with a full complement of drums and percussion, which creates performances of extraordinary range and musical challenges. The repertoire includes American classical masterpieces, Dixieland, swing, Broadway, Hollywood and patriotic music. The six-member group performs solo and also appears with symphony orchestras across the nation.
Tickets for the Guest Artist Series are available in the Financial Services Office on the second floor of Crawford Hall. Cost is $10 per performance. For ticket information, call (724) 458-2194.
