spacer GROVE CITY SENIORS SECOND IN NATION ON CIVIC LITERACY
spacer
September 26, 2007

GROVE CITY, Pa. – Grove City College ranks second only to Harvard University in seniors’ knowledge of American history and institutions, according to a recent Intercollegiate Studies Institute study that tested colleges and universities nationwide.

Overall, Grove City outranked most elite schools, while maintaining less than half the tuition costs. Grove City also recorded the highest increase in knowledge between freshmen and seniors than other Pennsylvania universities.

Commissioned by the ISI, the study was administered by the University of Connecticut’s Department of Public Policy. For the second year in a row, it identifies the lack of knowledge most college students have about American history, government and politics and ranks colleges and universities according to strength of coursework, learning and civic involvement.

Researchers asked more than 14,000 randomly selected college freshmen and seniors at 50 colleges and universities across the country 60 multiple-choice questions aimed at measuring their knowledge in four subject areas: American history, government, America and the world, and the market economy.

Grove City seniors answered an average of 67.26 percent of the questions correctly, outperforming seniors at most of the nation’s elite schools. Seniors at Yale University ranked fourth with 65.85 percent, Duke University seniors’ score of 63.41 percent ranked ninth, Princeton University seniors ranked 11th with 61.90 percent and Cornell University seniors finished 19th with 56.95 percent. Harvard University’s seniors topped the list with 69.56 percent.

Grove City also outshined other Pennsylvania schools. University of Pennsylvania seniors ranked eighth with 63.49 percent and Carnegie Mellon University ranked 20th with 56.90 percent. Grove City also outperformed University of Pennsylvania and Carnegie Mellon with a 3.62 percent increase in students’ knowledge.
