February 03, 2012
GROVE CITY, Pa. – Grove City College will serve as a regional chapter host site for MATHCOUNTS, a competition program that promotes middle school mathematics achievement through grassroots involvement across the country, on Saturday, Feb. 11, in Hoyt Hall and the Hall of Arts and Letters on campus. The event is sponsored by the Pennsylvania Society of Professional Engineers (PSPE).
The competition, featuring the work of sixth, seventh and eighth grade students, challenges individuals and teams of students to answer fun and creative problems that promote critical thinking and problem-solving skills. The competition, consisting of written and oral rounds, provides problems from the middle school standards of the National Council of Teachers in Mathematics.
Students and teachers were provided with MATHCOUNTS materials to prepare prior to the competition. Participants advance through school, chapter and state competition until 224 middle school students are selected to advance to the national competition held in May. As middle schoolers, all students participating at Grove City College will be eligible for advancement.
