GROVE CITY COLLEGE TEAM EXCELS AT DEBATE TOURNEY |

GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Grove City College Speech and Debate Team recently won the sweepstakes competition at a debate tournament at Hillsdale (Mich.) College on Jan. 19-20. Grove City advanced the most teams in the tournament and earned the most team points to win the sweepstakes portion against a field of 23 teams.
In individual honors, freshman Luke Juday of Chesapeake, Va., garnered honors as the top novice speaker and placed second overall in speaker points.
The team of junior Renae Smith of Sterling, Va., and freshman Justin Olson of Westfield, Ind., placed second overall. Seniors Sean O’Brien of Amity, Pa., and George Stephanis of Marietta, Pa., also advanced to the semi-final rounds.
Juday, freshman Andrew McIndoe of Oak Ridge, N.C., sophomore Anna Cassell of Wantage, N.J., and team captain and junior Courtney Winther of Modesto, Calif., advanced to the quarterfinal rounds. Junior Erica Heerschap of Mount Solon, Va., and freshman Mai-Khanh Gunther of Marlton, N.J.
“I am pleased with the success of the team,” said team adviser Dr. Steven Jones. “The move to this more intellectually stimulating and practical form of debate has been good for the whole program. I look forward to future competition and building a reputation for excellence and sportsmanship.”
The Grove City Speech and Debate Team is the oldest organized club at the College and was first established in 1876 by College founder Isaac C. Ketler.
