Grove City College will break ground this spring for construction of a science, engineering and mathematics building -- key components of Grove City Matters: A Campaign to Advance Grove City College, which at $90 million is the largest capital campaign in the college's history.
The $37.2-million science, engineering and mathematics building is designed to support new modes of teaching, particularly flexible laboratories and small-group interactions. It will help ensure that Grove City College continues to prepare students for future careers in an increasingly competitive work force, officials said.
There's no debating the fact Daniel Hanson is one of the best at what he does. The 21-year-old college student from Danville recently competed in the World Universities Debating Championships in Botswana, Africa.
"It was a great experience," said Hanson.
When he graduates from Grove City this spring, Hanson intends to attend graduate school, working toward his goal of becoming a policy analyst. He has applied to nine schools, and is waiting to hear where he will be accepted.
Republican U.S. Rep. Mike Kelly’s new office is in the far reaches of the Cannon House Office Building. But his supporters, who took a bus at 5 a.m. Wednesday from Butler to see their representative’s swearing in ceremony at the U.S. Capitol, didn’t seem to mind the trek.
Andrew Patterson, a junior at Grove City College where he chairs the College Republicans, took the bus along with two other Grove City students, several families and individuals.
“To see our representatives, the people we elected, in a peaceful changing of power, especially with the changing from the Democrats to Republicans, is a special thing to see and shows how great our country really is,” he said, noting it was his first time to the Capitol for a swearing in.
While Grove City College senior football star Pete Polesnak wrapped up his great Wolverines’ career, reaping first-team conference honors, he still has a chance to display his talents on an international stage.
Polesnak, a former Kennedy Catholic High grid standout, has been invited to compete in the Aztec Bowl as a member of Team Stars and Stripes against a Mexican squad Tazon de Estrellas.
For students who want to get a rigorous education in a conservative Christian environment, Grove City is a bargain.
"Grove City College isn't for everyone -- no college is -- but for those students looking for an authentically Christian school with rigorous academics at an amazing value, it is that place," said John Inman, dean of enrollment at the college.
…Still, students know how to break away from the books: The school offers more than 130 clubs, many musical groups, and Division III sports teams. Intramural sports also are popular: 60% of Grove City's 2,500 undergrads participate.
