GROVE CITY, Pa. – In only its second year of competition in parliamentary debate, the Grove City College Speech and Debate Team finished 11th in the country as ranked by the National Parliamentary Debate Association, one of the largest intercollegiate debate associations.
To close out the year, the team competed in the national tournament at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo. Prior to nationals, the debaters traveled to other regional competitions, as well as the National Christian Colleges Forensic Invitational. There, three of Grove City College’s teams were in the top eight; two were in the top four.
Daniel Hanson, a freshman from Danville, N.H., ranked eighth in the country at the national invitational for individual speakers. His partner, Kelsey Winther, a freshman from Modesto, Calif., was the No. 1 debater in the country, an extraordinary accomplishment for two first-year students.
“Parliamentary debate stresses logic, persuasion and critical thinking skills more than most other forms of collegiate debate,” said the debate team adviser Dr. Steven Jones. “These are exactly the kind of habits at the heart of a liberal arts education, and we are pleased to have the opportunity to showcase our skills.”
The Speech and Debate Team is coached by Jones, associate professor of sociology, and Dr. Jason Edwards, assistant professor of education and humanities.
