GROVE CITY, Pa. – Grove City College Associate Professor of History Dr. Mark Graham is author of “Ancient Empires: From Mesopotamia to the Rise of Islam,” by Cambridge University Press. The text seeks to communicate a vision of the ancient world that prompts a historically informed understanding of social power, particularly as it relates to order, justice and freedom. The book is co-authored by Dr. Eric Cline of George Washington University.
The text, which provides an overview of the ancient Near East, the Mediterranean and Europe, including the Greco-Roman world, Late Antiquity and early Muslim period, concludes that some of the ancient world’s most enduring ideas, value systems and institutions were formulated by people who were resisting the great empires of their time. The text explores ideological, economic, military and political power for both empires and resisting groups.
Graham was named the 2011 Grove City College Professor of the Year by the campus leadership honorary Omicron Delta Kappa in late April. He is the author of many articles, essays, reviews and books. He has traveled extensively in several historical locations throughout the world, including North Africa and Turkey. Graham is also proficient in four languages outside of English, including Latin, German, Greek and French.
