GROVE CITY, Pa. – A Grove City College alumnus, Jim Sterrett, Class of 1955, has given a generous gift to his alma mater to establish the Dale O. Smock Memorial Fund. Scholarship money will be awarded to a student whose major lies within the Albert A. Hopeman Jr. School of Science, Engineering and Mathematics, with a preference to students whose major lies within the Department of Engineering.
Sterrett’s generous gift is in memory of Dale Smock ’42, who helped build the campus radio station, WSAJ, and died on Jan. 28, 2007. He served on the Grove City College faculty from 1942 to 1980 and was instrumental in establishing the College’s electrical engineering program. Smock also helped to install the College’s first computer and served as chief engineer and adviser to College student radio personnel. He oversaw the formation of the student chapter of the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers, advised the Adelphikos fraternity for 20 years and was active for more than 35 years with the Outing Club.
Sterrett of Palo Alto, Calif., was an electrical engineering major while at Grove City College. He earned advanced degrees in engineering from Stanford University and received the Jack Kennedy Memorial Alumni Achievement Award in 1992 for his accomplishments in the field of science. His mother, Ruth Tinker, Class of 1923, and grandfather, David Tinker, Class of 1893, are both Grove City College graduates. Sterrett also studies family genealogy.
Dale’s wife, Ruth, resides in Grove City.
Gifts to the scholarship fund in Smock’s memory may be made by contacting the Grove City College Development Office at (866) 386-3422.
