GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Eden Hall Foundation and the Richard King Mellon Foundation have both recently approved grants to support Phase I of Grove City College’s new Science, Engineering and Mathematics building construction. The significant construction project is a key component of Grove City Matters: A Campaign to Advance Grove City College, which at $90 million is the largest capital campaign in the College’s history.
The $37.2-million Science, Engineering and Mathematics Building is designed to support new modes of teaching, particularly flexible laboratories and small-group interactions. It will ensure that Grove City College continues to prepare students for future careers in an increasingly competitive workforce.
With an additional 63,000 square feet of teaching and research space, the Science, Engineering and Mathematics Building will allow the College to keep pace with increasingly sophisticated technologies and didactics, and to attract talented students, as well as a world-class faculty with a passion for teaching and interdisciplinary research. Construction and outfitting of the building is expected to take 24 to 30 months. The architect of the Science, Engineering and Mathematics Building is Ballinger of Philadelphia, Pa., with PJ Dick of Pittsburgh, Pa., serving as construction manager.
The Eden Hall Foundation, the largest funder of programs and projects that support the quality of life for women and girls throughout Southwestern Pennsylvania, is a private foundation established pursuant to the will of Sebastian Mueller, a Pittsburgh philanthropist and vice present and director of the H.J. Heinz Company. During his lifetime, Mueller gave substantial support to improve conditions of the poor and disadvantaged, the promotion of sound education and the support of health facilities and projects.
The trustees of the foundation seek to continue Mueller’s stewardship in the areas of social welfare, health, education and the arts through providing grants to these basic programs. Each program strives to achieve outcomes that reflect community need and foundation goals, ensuring results that are strategic and responsive to the region’s needs.
The Richard King Mellon Foundation invests in the competitive future and quality of life in Southwestern Pennsylvania, and in the protection, preservation and restoration of America’s environmental heritage. Created in 1947 by Richard King Mellon, president and chairman of Mellon Bank, the foundation’s current giving priorities serve Pittsburgh and Southwestern Pennsylvania with a program focus on regional economic development and conservation, along with education and human services and nonprofit capacity building.
