April 20, 2007
GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Grove City College Early Education Center, Education Department and student education honoraries will sponsor a Family Fun Night to mark the national observance of the Week of the Young Child, April 23-27. The event is set for 6 to 8 p.m. April 26 in the IM Room of the Physical Learning Center on campus and is free and open to the public.
The Week of the Young Child is sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children, an organization dedicated to improving the quality of early education programs. According to the NAEYC, children attending high-quality preschool programs are more likely to develop the language, pre-mathematics and social skills necessary to succeed in school. Thus, the week seeks to support the healthy development and early learning of children.
The Family Fun Night will include stories, music, performances, games, activities and refreshments. Families with children eight years old or younger are encouraged to attend.
Other events that will be held in observance of the Week of the Young Child include: • Costume Parade – 9:30 a.m. or 1:15 p.m. April 23. Weather permitting, the parade will circle outside the Hall of Arts and Letters to the Student Union. Otherwise, it will be held in the Hall of Arts and Letters. Participants may wear their favorite story or video character costume and are asked to bring a story or video to share. • Imagination Parade – 9:45 a.m. or 1:15 p.m. April 24 in the Hall of Arts and Letters. Participants may wear any costume of their choosing. • Pet Show – 11:10 a.m. or 2:40 p.m. April 26 at the Early Education Center playground. Stuffed pets are also welcome. One pet per child. Pets must be on a leash or in a secure container.
The Grove City College Early Education Center, under the guidance of Dr. Lois Johnson, director, and Carolyn Patterson, assistant director, has classes for 3- and 4-year-olds and 4- and 5-year-olds. The goal for the Center is twofold: to offer the children of the community a high-quality education that focuses on their overall development; and to help prepare Grove City College early childhood education students to become high-quality professionals. Education students complete course work in the Center, learning how to implement the theories of early childhood education they have studied in their classes. Debbie Mincey also serves as a part-time teacher.
