March 21, 2011
GROVE CITY, Pa. – Are schools emphasizing the knowledge and skills that students need in a global society or are schools actually undermining their strengths by overemphasizing high-stakes testing and standardization? Are educational systems in China and other countries really as superior as many people claim?
The third annual conference of the Northwest Region Pennsylvania STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Network, “Meeting the STEM Challenge: Inspiration, Innovation & Leadership,” hosted by Grove City College on May 24 on campus, will seek to examine these questions, among others, that are vital to the direction of the nation’s education system in the future.
The conference will bring together key stakeholders in K-12 education, higher education and business to collaborate and share programs that will expand options for students to acquire science, technology, engineering and mathematics competence and increase opportunities in these fields.
The conference will feature a keynote address by Dr. Yong Zhao, presidential chair and associate dean for global education, College of Education at the University of Oregon and author of “Catching Up or Leading the Way.” Attendees, which include representatives from K-12 education, higher education, business and industry, community agencies and the government, will have the opportunity to participate in three “Best Practice” sessions focused on STEM programs designed to promote STEM curriculum and encourage mutual partnerships between education and business.
At the conclusion of the conference, the “STEM Congress Roundtable,” a panel of individuals representing various professions, will share additional perspectives on conference discussion topics. A number of vendors will also be in attendance with STEM curriculum materials, programs, and technology related products.
