spacer ECONOMICS

The Department of Economics rests upon the belief that economic thought is part and parcel of a liberal arts perspective of truth embedded in a Christian worldview.

The economics faculty strives to aid students in the development of a worldview that values seeking truth in all areas of inquiry and integrates knowledge in economics with knowledge acquired in other academic disciplines.

Because economic thought is an essential ingredient of determining the nature of a good society, the Department seeks to help students understand economic thought and how it can be applied to social problems and opportunities.

Faculty members of the Department of Economics believe honest and diligent inquiry in the social sciences demonstrates that the well being of mankind is best promoted in a free and virtuous society. We aim at helping to equip students to participate in bringing about a good society as a complement to preparing them for careers and graduate studies in economics and related fields.

CURRICULA

Economics
Economics is the explication, examination and application of the inexorable laws of human action. Beginning from a Christian understanding of man and nature, courses in economics develop the theories of how prosperity is generated in an unhampered market economy, destroyed in a socialist economy, and suppressed under government interventions such as monetary inflation and credit expansion, taxing and subsidizing, wealth redistribution schemes, and regulation. Interdisciplinary courses demonstrate how a market economy is sustained within a larger free society where the liberty and private property that provide its foundation are defended by government and used to establish a variety of voluntary associations to provide what the market economy cannot. Other courses examine the efficacy of voluntary solutions to social problems.

Business Economics
In addition to the business core, requirements are Business Policy and additional hours in business or accounting, plus selected economics courses.
