spacer
May 01, 2008

GROVE CITY, Pa. – Retiring Professor of Biochemistry Dr. David Jones was named the 2008 Grove City College Professor of the Year at a ceremony in Harbison Chapel on May 1.

Jones, who joined the Grove City College faculty in 1990, will retire at the end of the semester. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Bethany Nazarene College, his master’s degree from the University of Oklahoma and his Ph.D. from Cornell University.

During a post-doctorate fellowship, Jones conducted research at the UCLA chemistry department and worked with Dr. Paul Boyer on mitochondria and cell energy. Boyer went on to win the Nobel Prize from the research in 1997.

Then for nine years, Jones taught in the biochemistry department at Albany Medical College in Albany, N.Y. While there he also did research on mammary gland metabolism related to energy transfer reactions. Jones moved to the Oral Roberts University medical school that was forming at the time in Tulsa, Okla. There, he met Dr. Durwood Ray, now also a professor of biology at Grove city College. The two have formed an impressive research partnership conducting cancer research and will continue working together after Jones’ retirement.

Besides biochemistry, Jones has taught genetics and developmental biology at Grove City. In retirement, Jones plans to carry on his cancer research with Ray, fish in his new fishing boat, bird-watch and continue his involvement at East Main Presbyterian Church.

Jones and his wife, Jean, have three children: Martha, Kathleen ’94 and Timothy ’00. They have five grandchildren with another on the way.

The Professor of the Year was initiated in 2000 by the Omicron Delta Kappa campus leadership honorary and is sponsored by the Grove City College Alumni Association. Past winners include Larry Fleming (2007), Dr. Ralph Carlson ’62 (2006), Dr. James Bibza (2005), Richard Leo (2004), Dr. James Dixon (2003), Dr. Timothy Homan (2002), Dr. John Sparks ’66 (2001) Dr. Gary Smith ’72 (2000).
