“…it starts right now. Being an alum starts right now.”

Commencement denotes a pivotal moment in the lives of college students. It marks the end of an era and the bright beginnings of the next. Among the many changes that occur on this exciting day, graduating seniors are no longer considered “alumni-in-residence;” instead, they are welcomed to the 24,000 member family of Grove City College alumni. Recognizing the immediacy and new role assumed with this transition, Doug Haus ’07 has actively invested in his alma mater within the few short months since his graduation.

On campus, Haus left his mark on Grove City College in several ways. Involvement in activities and organizations proved to be some of the most formative experiences during his time as a student. Haus recalls, “I signed up for everything my freshman year…then I took the second semester off [of activities] to prioritize.” Among the organizations which remained a priority to him was the Beta Sigma fraternity. Serving as chaplain during his sophomore year, Haus was part of the core group actively involved with reviving the fraternity charter while orienting the group to be service and leadership-focused. “This is the legacy I hope to have left behind,” says Haus, “for men to serve God, and others, throughout campus.” In addition to his involvement with Beta Sigma, Haus also served as an upperclass resident assistant for two years, as well as president of the Beta Beta Beta biology honorary.

In addition to his on-campus involvement, Haus also utilized his talents and abilities in the outside world. Bringing life to an aspiration to serve others through long-term medical missions, Haus spent time in Ghana with other students and professor Dr. Mark Weber through the College’s medical missions program. According to Haus, this experience was “an opportunity of service to God…of using medicine to share the Gospel.” This experience, coupled with his completion of a molecular biology major and religion minor, has equipped Haus to further his studies in pursuit of a medical doctor’s degree. He is currently enrolled in courses at Cornell University and completing Emergency Medical Technician certification and plans to attend medical school next fall. Blending his passion to serve others with his talents, Haus hopes to provide both medical support and the Gospel to the underserved in the United States or Africa.

Reminded of the teaching, "to whom much is given, much is to be required," Haus is compelled to give of his resources in order to provide for the students who follow him.  He views giving to Grove City College as an investment, recognizing that others invested in him while he was a student.  Haus affirms the founding mission of the College and hopes to continue to contribute in order to preserve the ideals of providing an excellent education in a Christian environment at an affordable price.  "It starts right now...being an alum starts right now."  Haus recognizes the immediacy of his position as an alumnus, and also the responsibility that comes with it.  He is dedicated to carrying on the tradition of alumni investing in students, exemplified by previous generations of alumni investing in today's students.
