GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Grove City College Speech and Debate Team took not only first place, but second place as well at the Pi Kappa Delta (PKD) national championship tournament in Portland, Ore. The tournament, hosted by Mount Hood Community College on March 23-26, featured the very best of intercollegiate forensics in a full range of individual and team events.
After six rounds of preliminary debate, two teams from the College advanced to the single elimination championship bracket. Both teams won their first two elimination rounds, setting up a final between two Grove City College teams. Since teams from the same college or university do not compete against each other, the teams received first and second place honors.
Seniors Dayne Batten of Cary, N.C., and Alex Pepper of Centreville, Va., took first place overall in the PKD national tournament based on preliminary records, while junior Walter “Kirby” Gowen IV of Livermore, Calif., and sophomore Marc Davis of Hillsboro, Ore., received second place.
In addition to the winning teams, sophomore Kate Nagatani of San Diego, Calif., and junior Holly Stansbery of North Canton, Ohio, were both among the top four speakers in the tournament. Junior Jimmy Van Eerden of Stokesdale, N.C., and his partner, sophomore Nate Cowling of Canton, Ohio, were recognized as achieving “excellence” for their winning record.
Dr. Steven Jones, associate professor of sociology, advises the team. Dr. Jason Edwards, professor of English and humanities, also traveled with the team and assisted the squad in preparation.
