GROVE CITY, Pa. – Grove City College will host nationally recognized Dante scholar Dr. Anthony Esolen of Providence College as part of the Humanities Lecture Series at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 25 in Sticht Lecture Hall of the Hall of Arts and Letters.
Esolen will speak on “How to Put Your Soul on Ice: Freedom and Autonomy in Dante’s Divine Comedy.” The presentation is free and open to the public.
Esolen is professor of English at Providence. He wrote “Ironies of Faith: The Laughter at the Heart of Christian Literature,” a work that deals with the ironies and paradoxes of the Christian faith as they appear in the writings of St. Augustine, Dante, John Milton, William Shakespeare, Charles Dickens and others. He also released “The Politically Incorrect Guide to Western Civilization” this year.
In addition to Ironies of Faith, Esolen served as editor and translator for the Random House edition of Dante’s “Divine Comedy” in three volumes, as well as for Lucretius’ “On the Nature of Things” (Johns Hopkins, 1995) and Torquato Tasso’s “Jerusalem Delivered” (1995). He also published a volume of poetry called “Peppers” and serves as an editor of “Touchstone” magazine.
