COMPETITION FEATURES NEW FORMAT, NINE PERFORMERS |

GROVE CITY, Pa. – Now in its 15th year, the Grove City College Concerto Competition will feature nine student finalists competing for solo spots in the spring orchestra concert April 24. The competition will begin at 7 p.m. Jan. 30 in Ketler Auditorium of the Pew Fine Arts Center on campus. The event is free and open to the public; no tickets are required.
This year, the Music and Fine Arts Department instituted a new format to allow participants to perform their entire selection during the Jan. 30 competition. After a round of preliminary hearings judged by the College music faculty during the week of Jan. 19-23, the nine finalists were chosen. They are:
• Junior Elizabeth Bieber of Palmyra, Pa. – “The Laughing Song” from Johann Strauss’ “Die Fledermaus” • Sophomore Emily Bzdafka of Avon Lake, Ohio – “The Jewel Song” from Charles Gounod’s “Faust” • Junior Monica Dudek of Ford City, Pa. – “Volta la Terrea” from Guiseppe Verdi’s “Un ballo in Maschera” • Sophomore Elizabeth Heist of Friedens, Pa. – “Concerto No 3 for Horn” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart • Sophomore Danielle Henry of Lyons, N.Y. – “Carmen Fantasy” by Francois Borne • Senior Julie Kulin of Corry, Pa. – “Concerto for Trumpet” by Johann Nepomuk Hummel • Sophomore Jimmy Pang of Staten Island, N.Y. – “Concerto in D Major for Violin” by Johannes Brahms • Junior Sarah Parris of Chadbourn, N.C. – “Second Concerto in g minor for Piano” by Camille Saint-Saens • Sophomores Emily Stumpf of Baltimore, Md.; Alexis Stave of Maple Plain, Minn.; and Jimmy Pang of Staten Island, N.Y. – “Brandenburg Concerto No. 4” by J. S. Bach
Judges for this year’s competition are Dr. Nanette Solomon, professor of piano at Slippery Rock University; Dr. Misook Yun, professor of voice at Youngstown State University; and Mr. Michael Gelfand, professor of cello at Youngstown State University and the conductor of the Greenville Symphony Orchestra.
