November 10, 2010
GROVE CITY, Pa. – Grove City College will host a workshop on using music therapy to assist students and adults with special needs 8 a.m.–5 p.m. Nov. 15 in the Pew Fine Arts Center on campus. The event is free and open to the public.
Representatives of SoundTree, a leading provider of ready-to-use music education systems, will demonstrate the practical uses of Soundbeam, a device that uses ultrasonic light beams to detect the direction and speed of body movements at distances up to 20 feet and without physical contact. Soundbeam converts these movements into electronic music through an electric keyboard or sampler.
Soundbeam is designed to help children and adults with learning and physical disabilities gain a sense of control over their physical environment because the machine reacts to even slight movements. The system has been used to help people with conditions including autism, ADHD, dementia, Down’s Syndrome, Rett’s Syndrome, depression, Alzheimer’s disease and challenging behaviors.
Soundbeam is also marketed for use in professional dance, music classrooms and science centers.
For more information on the Grove City College event, contact Dr. Joseph Pisano, assistant chair of the department of music and fine arts and associate professor of music and fine arts technology, at (724) 458-3799 or by e-mail at jmpisano@gcc.edu.
