GROVE CITY, Pa. – Grove City College has been named the Top Value in Private Liberal-Arts Schools throughout the nation by Consumers Digest Magazine’s “Top 100 College Values.” The rankings, to be published in Consumer Digest’s June 2011 issue, are based on attributes that validate or define the institution’s academic prowess factored against cost of tuition, fees and room and board. More than 2,000 colleges and universities that offered four-year degrees were considered for the rankings.
Grove City College beat out Williams College of Williamstown, Mass.; Pomona College of Claremont, Calif.; Amherst College of Amherst, Mass.; and Claremont McKenna College of Claremont, Calif., ranked No. 2 – 5, respectively, to take the top spot.
The rankings were derived from a formula that blended the academic excellence of first-time freshmen at a school, evaluated through standardized test scores, high-school rank and grade point average, as well as the institution’s educational quality, assessed by four- and six-year graduation rate, student-retention rate and percentage of faculty holding a Ph.D. That value index score was then factored with the cost of attending each school to determine which schools offered the most academic value per dollar.
Other top valued institutions included Truman State University of Kirksville, Mo., ranked No. 1 among public institutions, and Yale University of New Haven, Conn., which took top honors among private institutions. Grove City College previously earned a No. 4 ranking as Top Value in Private Liberal-Arts Schools by Consumers Digest in 2004.
