spacer COLLEGE OFFERS TWO NEW MINORS
spacer
January 18, 2012

GROVE CITY, Pa. – Grove City College students now have the opportunity to minor in classical studies and classical Christian education. Both minors engage students in the classical world and encourage wide exposure to this influential historical era. The minors are open to all enrolled Grove City College students.

The classical studies minor, part of the Department of Biblical and Religious Studies, consists of 21 credit hours and explores traditions of Greece, Rome, Judaism and early Christianity, both for their intrinsic historical interest and for the contributions each has made to Western civilization. Students will take one course from three of 11 categories in anthropology, art, biblical and religious studies, classical Christian education, Greek, history, Latin, literature, philosophy, political science, and rhetoric. The remaining 12 credits will come from the student’s choice of electives from other courses in these categories.

The classical Christian education minor, also housed in the Department of Biblical and Religious Studies, will consist of 23 credit hours, 21 as required by the classical studies minor, plus a two-credit hour internship in the field. The minor, unique among peer institutions, will prepare students interested in pursuing careers in Classical Christian Schools after graduation.

“Having an understanding of the classics, both of Greece and Rome, as well as of ancient and medieval Christianity, helps foster solid analytical thinking skills and provides deep enrichment for the student,” said Dr. Paul Schaefer, chair of the Department of Biblical and Religious Studies.

“Classical studies have actually been a part of the Grove City College curriculum for many years through an interdisciplinary program run through the department of biblical and religious studies. By making explicit two particular programs, we hope to help provide some foundations for students who might be looking towards doing graduate work in the fields of ancient history or classical studies, teaching at a classical school or classical Christian school or provide enrichment for students who simply find the ancient and medieval worlds fascinating as field of study in themselves.”
