GROVE CITY, Pa. – Grove City College welcomes six new members to the board of trustees. The new members include Donald L. Balla Jr. ’93, Alejandro Antonio Chafuen ’84, Theodore W. Johnson, Robb Jones ’75, Eric M. Pillmore and Dan D. Sandman.
Donald L. Balla Jr. ’93, the alumni council finance chair at Grove City College, has assisted in the increased amount of participants that gave to the College representing more than 700 giving individuals and groups during his tenure.
Balla has provided insurance brokerage and consulting services to more than 1,000 companies resulting in millions of dollars in employer premium savings. As the managing principal of the employee benefits division of Simpson & McCrady, he has helped his department earn more than $1.75 million in annual revenue.
An accredited continuing education instructor, Balla has spoken at numerous lectures and taught courses for the Society for Human Resources. As an elder with the Presbyterian Church of America, he has had the opportunity to counsel individuals, direct capital campaigns, hold the office of secretary, serve on praise teams and lead outreach ministries. He and his wife, Deborah (Robich ’94), have two children.
Alejandro Antonio Chafuen ’84, president and CEO of Atlas Economic Research Foundation since 1991, is a frequent commentator on economics, security and strategic threats in Latin America, as well as on the relationship between economics and ethics, such as corporate social responsibility and corruption.
Author of “Faith and Liberty,” Chafuen’s work has been published in Spain, Poland and Italy. He received a Ph.D in economics from International College, Calif., and has served on the board of several organizations such as the Chase Foundation of the Commonwealth of Virginia and has served as an associate professor at the Argentine Catholic University, the University of Buenos Aires and The Hispanic American University, Calif. He and his wife, Melanie (Bailey ’83), have two children.
Theodore W. Johnson, chief of the United States Probation and Pretrial Services in the Western District of Pennsylvania, acts as a liaison with the chief judge and all judicial offers and maintains cooperative relationships with all other components of the Criminal Justice System. In this position, he has the responsibility for enforcing policies, procedures and guidelines necessary to identify and evaluate needs of the Court.
Johnson also received the prestigious national 2009 Director’s Award for Outstanding Leadership, after being nominated by the Board of Judges of the United States District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania and selected by the Director of Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts. He was the only 2009 award winner.
Johnson is active in minority communities, both locally and nationally. He and his wife, Barbara, have five children.
Robb Jones ’75, an Alumni Achievement Award winner at the College in 1993, is currently the senior vice president and general counsel for claims management for United Educators Insurance. In his position, he leads a team of 23 lawyers and 18 other professionals responsible for the liability claims management of more than 1,200 colleges, universities and K-12 schools.
Jones has also served as the director of the Judicial Education Division for the Federal Judicial Center, the administrative assistant to the late Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist of the Supreme Court of the United States and a partner and associate for Nixon Hargrave and Devans & Doyle. He and his wife, Lou Ann, have four children.
Eric M. Pillmore, senior vice president of Corporate Governance for Tyco International Ltd. from 2002 to 2007, has helped transform Tyco into the most improved U.S. company in the governance area from 2002 to 2005 according to Governance Metrics International.
Pillmore has served for 17 years in a variety of senior finance roles for General Electric, including roles as CFO for GE Plastics Americas and GE Medical Systems Asia. Pillmore also worked as the senior vice president and CFO for General Instrument Corporation leading up to the sale of the company to Motorola.
A U.S. Navy officer from 1975 to 1979, he currently serves on the boards of CARDONE Corporation, Revalesio Corporation, CEO Forum, Focus on the Family and the Ken Blanchard School of Business at Grand Canyon University. He and his wife, Pamela, have one child.
Dan D. Sandman served in a variety of roles throughout his distinguished professional career. He has worked for Marathon Oil Company in a series of positions in the company’s marketing, antitrust and oil and gas law areas, as well as a general attorney for refining and marketing law and U.S. exploration and production law.
He was elected general counsel and secretary of Marathon and USX Corporation in Pittsburgh and worked in human resources, public affairs and for government and environmental affairs. Upon the split-off of U.S. Steel from USX Corporation, he was named vice chairman and chief legal & administrative officer and elected to the United States Steel Corporation Board of Directors. He retired from U.S. Steel in 2007.
Sandman served on the board of directors for organizations such as the United States Steel Corporation and Roppe Rubber Corporation. He was a board member for The Phillips Companies, EMS Pipeline Service Company and chairman of the board for the Heinz History Center and Ohio State University College of Law National Council. Sandman was also named the co-chair of the Pennsylvania Corporate Counsel Roundtable by Pennsylvania Supreme Court Chief Justice the late Ralph Cappy. He and his wife, Bonnie, have two children.
