GROVE CITY, Pa. – Grove City College has been named one of The Princeton Review’s top 100 “Best Value Colleges for 2009.” The Princeton Review and “USA Today” teamed up to present the findings today, found at www.princetonreview.com and www.usatoday.com. The list includes 50 public and 50 private colleges and universities in 33 states.
Grove City College was just one of four Pennsylvania schools listed, along with Swarthmore, Lafayette and Bryn Mawr.
“Especially during these tough economic times, it’s important to be able to find a college that families can afford that offers rigorous academics and a Christian environment,” said College President Richard G. Jewell ’67. “Many people don’t think all those things can co-exist. Here at Grove City College, we know they can.”
According to The College Board, the average cost of tuition and fees to attend a private four-year college in 2008-09 is $25,143 (up 5.9 percent from last year). Public college costs rose 6.4 percent. At Grove City College in 2008-09, full-time students in residence halls pay $18,514 annually, which includes tuition, room and board and a tablet PC and color printer/scanner/copier. Grove City College does not tack on additional fees required to be paid by all students.
The Princeton Review selected the top “best value” choices based on surveys of administrators and students at more than 650 public and private colleges and universities. The selection criteria covered more than 30 factors in three areas: academics, costs of attendance and financial aid, using the most recently reported data from each institution for its 2007-08 academic year.
The “USA Today” web site features a database with in-depth details about each school. Visitors can explore criteria including cost of attendance and financial aid data, enrollment size and The Princeton Review’s analysis of why each school was chosen. According to the Grove City College profile, “If you are looking for a conservative and affordable private school with strong Christian values, passionate professors, and rigorous academic standards, you would be hard-pressed to find a better choice than Grove City College.”
The Princeton Review is a New York-based education services company offering test-prep courses, college and graduate school admission services and education programs. Methodology for the Best Value list included colleges that “stellar academics with a modest price tag.” Each school was rated for academics (admissions data, acceptance rate, study habits of students, professor reputations), as well as for financial aid (need-based aid, award packages). The “Real Cost of College” is also taken into account. The Princeton Review starts with the sticker price of each college’s tuition, required fees and room and board, and subtracts the average gift aid (scholarships and grants).
The best stood out in one of two ways: by offering a very affordable tuition sticker price while also delivering a quality education, or by making a higher tuition cost affordable to anyone who is invited to attend by distributing generous amounts of financial aid.
