GROVE CITY, Pa. – Grove City College has launched a new academic journal focused on law and public policy. With its launch, it is one of only six undergraduate law reviews or journals in the country.
The “Journal of Law and Public Policy” serves as a resource to increase awareness of legal issues both domestically and abroad. The journal also aspires to provide Grove City College students with the opportunity to contribute writing to a non-literary publication.
The journal launched this month. Grove City College Trustee David Lascell, who was involved in the landmark Grove City College v. Bell case of 1984, wrote a featured piece for the inaugural issue. A practicing attorney at Harter Secrest & Emery LLP, Lascell specializes in business litigation and education law. Lascell, a graduate of Cornell Law School, was named a New York Super Lawyer in 2008 and 2009.
The journal strives to encourage interest in the field of law and the pursuit of scholarly research among undergraduates, faculty and alumni. The publication includes five to seven submissions from students and professors, ranging in content. The journal will produce one volume per academic year with an issue in the spring and fall semesters and will be 70 to 80 pages in length.
The Student Board of Editors, led by co-founder and editor-in-chief James Van Eerden of Stokesdale, N.C., is responsible for the collaboration, editing and blind peer-reviewing of the journal. The student board will be assisted by an Alumni Board of Editors and Faculty Board of Editors.
The Faculty Board of Editors will assist with the editing process and provide guidance for the selection of submissions. The faculty board is led by: Dr. John Sparks ‘66, dean of the Alva J. Calderwood School of Arts and Letters and professor of business; Dr. Garey Spradley, chair of the department of philosophy and professor of philosophy, theology and law; Dr. Craig Columbus, executive director of the entrepreneurship program, chair of the department of entrepreneurship and associate professor of entrepreneurship; Dr. Gary Smith ‘72, chair of the department of history, professor of history and coordinator of the humanities core; and Dr. Jennifer Scott ‘99, chair of the department of communication studies and assistant professor of communication studies.
Other faculty members on the board include: Dr. Michael Coulter, professor of political science and humanities; Dr. Paul Kemeny, professor of religion and humanities; Dr. Daniel Brown, professor of communication studies; Dr. Paul Kengor, executive director of The Center for Vision & Values at Grove City College and professor of political science; Dr. Samuel Stanton, associate professor of political science; and Dr. Steven Jones, associate professor of sociology.
Van Eerden developed the journal concept after a conversation with Stephen Johnson ’06, an admissions counselor the College. With the assistance of senior Kevin Hoffman of Ocean Grove, N.J., and sophomore Steve Irwin of Mount Gilead, Ohio, the team gained support for the journal among the administration, faculty and students, including Grove City College President, Dr. Richard G. Jewell.
